Back again, the traditional British Society Burns Night Special!
The Burns Supper, a highlight of the year for The British Society of Catalunya, proved to be a great success once more. Held in the charming “El Gran Café” in the heart of the Gothic quarter of the city, the private room, with its velvet curtains and mirrors, provided just the intimate atmosphere Burns enthusiasts love. “Just like the Café Royal in Edinburgh”, one British Society member said.
Our Piper, Pello, welcomed the guests as they sipped their cava. The Chairman, Stuart Hardy greeted one and all in true Highland fashion, and then Ken Douglas energetically addressed and dispatched the haggis! After a delicious supper - the haggis was flown in from McSween’s especially - we all thoroughly enjoyed the wit and humour of our speakers, well toasted with excellent whisky, of course. Michael Witty enlightened us to the finer details of the poet’s life, Eugene Sender and Brenda Wright toasted the lads and lassies with wit and verse, and Corwin Coward brought the land we live in vividly to life.

We had the great pleasure of Jenny Shaw and Trevor Barrowcliffe’s delightful singing, Trevor accompanying us on the keyboard as we all sang the Scottish airs with great enthusiasm. A final fling was the dancing of the Gay Gordons, the Cumberland Reel and the Welcome Reel. A memorable evening was had by all!
