Witty Walk - Please note change of date
Date: Saturday 31st October, 2009
Location: TBC
Some aerobic exercise!! Views of the coast at times on the way.
......
From Garraf to Sitges.Starting at the station at Garraf we will take a path up to the ridge at the top – about 45-60 mins steady climb (for those of you who went on Anita and Martin’s walk from Queralbs to Nuria, this is nowhere near as steep!). Then we walk across the top, all fairly flat, through a couple of little hamlets, and on to the ‘prettiest’ part of the walk – Vallcarca cement works (sorry about that but we walk round it not through it!). From there we take a zigzagging steepish path up through the woods till we get to l’Hermita de la Trinitat, where you will have lunch provided by the organisers at approx 10 euros a head (haven’t costed it exactly yet). After that it’s about 1 hour 30mins to 2 hours to Sitges station to go back to Barcelona, mostly downhill, possibly a bit rough underfoot till you get to the urbanizacion on the edge of Sitges. We calculate that there’ll be about 5 hours walking at a modest Witty Walk pace, just those couple of up bits for some aerobic exercise! Views of the coast at times on the way.We recommend using public transport to get there. There’s one train an hour from BCN that stops at Garraf. On the way back there are 4 trains an hour from Sitges. If you come by car you can park at Garraf station but there’s only one train an hour back from Sitges. If you’re coming from BCN take the 8.38 Vilanova train from Passeig de Gracia, 8.45 from Sants, arriving in Garraf at 9.14. (Don’t miss it as there won’t be another one for another hour and you’ll miss the walk!) 30 mins for coffee in a bar yet to be decided and we aim to start at about 9.45/10.If you’re coming from Sitges, either catch the 8.45 Barcelona train which gets you in rather early at 8.52 but you’ll have loads of time for a leisurely breakfast. The next train is at 9.45, arriving at 9.52, but you won’t have time for coffee. If you plan to catch the second train, let us know and we’ll make sure we wait for you. If you want to come by car, take the C31 past Castelldefels and take the coast road (ie don’t go through the tunnels) to Garraf. As you come to Garraf you will see the Gaudi house on your left as you come down the hill. Keep going up the hill after the bend (there is a solid white line on this road which does not allow you to cross to take the first left)so keep going for a few metres until you come to a section of the road that allows you to turn left (extra lane in middle of road). Do a U-turn here, go back down the hill and take the first right which is a cul-de-sac to the station. By car from Sitges, take the coast road to BCN and as you come into Garraf where the road widens with a short stretch of extra lane to allow oncoming traffic to turn into Garraf, don’t take this turning but the next one which is a cu-de-sac to the station. Please confirm that you’re coming by Monday 26th Oct so that we can cater for the picnic.martinkirby@gmail.com
Instructions for how to get to the bar:
Go out of the station and go down to the beach (very near). As you get to the beach on the left you will find a bar called Quim (or something very similar, Nichola couldn't remember exactly) with red tables and chairs on the beach. It's part of a restaurant. Garraf's so small that I don't think you can miss it but should anyone not find it they can phone Martin on 654120780 or Roger on 656640651. They will be catching the early train from Sitges so should be there before anyone else.
Anyone who hasn't booked yet please let us know asap as we have to do the shopping for the picnic! martinkirby@gmail.com
