Catalunya: A Country of Immigration and Emigration
Miquel Strubell, a sociolinguist at the Open University of Catalonia and graduate of Oxford University,
will discuss the recent population movements in Catalonia in the
context of past migration patterns, both to and from Catalonia, over
the past century. The talk will pay particular attention to the
relationship between migration and the particular circumstances of
Catalonia, both as it relates to the political history of SpainCatalan language.
To what extent have newcomers taken an interest in Catalan culture? The
number of non-Catalan names among those active in modern Catalan
culture –and even politics– is a remarkable indicator of the
integrative capacity of the Catalans.
